In A Nutshell – September 2019

Damn, I’ve been so busy these last couple months that I forgot to post my monthly roundups for September and October! Holy smokes! Well without further ado, here are my favorite posts from the month of September which saw me visit the cities of Dallas for Smoked BBQ Fest, Denver, and Cheyenne, WY.

Pieous – Austin/Dripping Springs

Mano Pastaria – Milk Market – Denver, CO

Bastien’s Restaurant – Denver, CO

Driving down Colfax in Denver you've probably noticed the big old Bastien's Restaurants sign advertising the home of the sugar steak and probably thought, "there's no way that place is good" but lemme tell ya, you're wrong! Decided to check this place out because I just loved the sign, the building, everything about it externally, and both @kyrenabeana and I are extremely happy we did! This is their bone-out dry aged ribeye sugar steak with veggies and mashed potatoes. Basically, a sugar steak is a mix of rubs including sugar that, while cooking, caramelizes and forms a beautiful and delicious crust on the steak that adds just a slight hint of pleasant sweetness and, I gotta say, this was one of the best steaks I've had in some time. There's a good reason Bastien's has been in existence since 1937, so what are you waiting for!?

LeRoy and Lewis – Austin
“El Paso Day” collaboration with JewBoy Burgers

The other day the food trucks at @cosmiccoffeebeer got together to raise money for the victims of the El Paso shooting and one of those offerings was a collaboration between @leroyandlewis and @jewboyburgers. @mopittle was there to model Leroy's smoked burger topped with his JewBoy hatch chile queso on El Paso Day. If you've not had the smoked burger from Leroy and Lewis yet, make that a priority because it's quite delicious. Next, make sure you visit @5000.burnet and get yourself a JewBoy burger because his flat top burger is one of the best in Austin. Happy to see local Austin businesses partnering up for a good cause because this is the kind of community Austin is known to be, let's keep it going!

Smoked BBQ Fest – Dallas

What's your go-to taco order? 🌮🌮🌮🌮🌮🌮🌮🌮🌮 It's #tacotuesday and I'm thinking back to @smokedbbqfest where there were a lot of bbq filled tacos to enjoy like the one from @hurtadobbq I'm stuffing my face with in this photo. Photo two is a good spread of the offerings at the fest. Third photo is of the awesome Texas Twinkies from @hutchins_bbq which might be the best deal in BBQ! Fourth is the mouth watering sweet & spicy pork belly from @bodacious_bbq_mobberly. Fifth are the famous beef ribs from @louiemuellerbbq. Overall this is an awesome BBQ festival that you should highly consider attending, for the cost and quality, it's hard to beat! 🌮🌮🌮🌮🌮🌮🌮🌮🌮 Personally, my go-to taco is carne guisada on a flour tortilla which is probably due to my South Texas roots!

Miller’s Smokehouse – Belton, TX

@kyrenabeana and I stopped in to @millerssmokehouse in Belton on our way to @smokedbbqfest for some dinner and while there @achapa3 told me about their El Gallo Picante sandwich and I was sold. They chop up one of the spicy hot links with their smoked BBQ chicken, top it with slaw, onions, jalapenos, and a bit of sauce all on one of their house made buns. I wasn't sure what I wanted when I walked in the door but this was definitely it and now I'm hooked. Belton is a short drive from Austin and has a lot to offer in a day trip including world class BBQ, baked goods, and coffee from Miller's, shops, and even a single screen movie theater @the_beltonian_theatre (that won't break the bank) playing classic movies like their current run of Enders Game and an upcoming run of Rocky!
