Where I’ve Been – San Diego/SoCal

**Updated 8/27/19**

I’ve had the privilege of visiting San Diego on a fairly regular basis due to my job. Well, just because I’m out there for work doesn’t mean I’m not enjoying the local (and surrounding areas) food scene! Here are the spots I have posted about over the years that I would gladly visit again!

Ballast Point Brewing Company

The Blind Burro

The Blind Rabbit – Anaheim

Bluewater Grill – Temecula

Bud’s Louisiana Cafe

Carnitas Snack Shack

Chez Nous

Francesca’s Italian Kitchen – Temecula

Grand Ole BBQ y Asado

Doesn't this tray look like I could've gotten it at any of the amazing BBQ places in Texas? Well, I didn't, this is Central Texas style BBQ that was ordered in San Diego, California! I showed you Grand Ole BBQ's Sunday Argentinian Asado special recently but this is what they serve every other day of the week, Texas style! I ordered some beef sausage, a couple pork ribs, some pulled pork, and some of their awesome potato salad with all the expected accoutrements, pickles, jalapenos, onions, bread. I even tried out the two sauces they provide even though, like Texans know, isn't necessary, but they still had a great flavor. If I found myself living in San Diego, for some reason, this would be where I went when I was feeling homesick.

When I heard @heritagebarbecue was having a pop-up in Anaheim at @brueryterreux the weekend I was in Southern California you know I had to make a roadtrip to check it out! Danny Castillo and his wife @mrs_heritage_bbq are doing great things representing Texas BBQ in the golden state doing a series of popups (only 6 left!!) in and around the OC. On this tray we have a thick slice of moist brisket, a couple of pork ribs (@kyrenabeana said they're the best she's had), pulled pork, choriqueso sausage, and his special for the day, pastrami spice rubbed smoked salmon (that was absolutely magical), with a side of his brisket burnt end beans, and choriqueso topped mac and cheese. I loved getting to meet and chat with Danny and Brenda and look forward to their next chapter and getting some BBQ with them next time they visit Austin!

One food phenomenon in southern California is the California burrito. The only thing I've noticed is the same from place to place is that it contains carne asada and French fries but after that it's a free-for-all. This particular Cali is from the popular chain @rubioscoastalgrill which can be found all over the place much like @tacocabana in Texas. Theirs consists of @usdagov choice steak, seasoned fries, and guacamole which I can say the guac adds a welcome freshness that other Cali's don't seem to have often. @kyrenabeana is a huge fan of Rubio's so I stopped in to one at least 3 times on this most recent trip so she could get her fix. Next time you're in SoCal, look for a California Burrito and lemme know what you think!
